Getting Going

Hey,

I'm Nick Van Horn writing my first blog because I'm about to bike and build the USA for a summer and this seems the best way to convey some words and pictures along the way.

I'm a chemical engineering student at Ohio University putting off a summer intern/co-op/research to devote myself to an organization called Bike and Build (www.bikeandbuild.org) that organizes summer cross-country bike/build--hence the name--trips for college students to raise money and awareness for the affordable housing issue in our country. I'm joining about 30 other kids (http://www.bikeandbuild.org/cms/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,251/) on the Northern US route (http://www.bikeandbuild.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=54). The plan's to ride from Portsmouth, NH to Vancouver, Canada stopping about once a week to do affordable housing work.

The first and seemingly hardest goal has been reached with the help of amazing family, friends, businesses, and fund raising. I've hit the $4,000 required goal of pre-ride donations to the youth-led affordable housing cause. I am overwhelmingly thankful for your generosity and know that without the help of these people I would be unable to take part in this worthwhile summer opportunity. Thank you.

I received my new Giant Defy 2 Bike and Build bike a few weeks ago and jumping on every warm day have been able to get 200 miles of riding in. During spring break a couple weeks back I got some build experience--mainly painting--working with Habitat for Humanity in Miami, FL. I've got some good biking/running buddies Mike and Jaye. Now all we need is it to stop snowing in April--I thought that was just a Cleveland thing--and get in shape.

More later,

Nick
